We are excited to share the results of the second round of a fascinating study we conducted as part of our ET Impact Initiative, "Where Are the Women in the Headlines?"
We analysed eight major Indian newspapers over two periods (June 2023 & June 2024) to assess the representation of women as newsmakers and sources of news.
The findings reveal a persistent gender disparity in media representation. While there's a slight improvement in the proportion of women newsmakers in 2024, as compared to 2023, it still shows dismal improvement/progress as compared to the GMMP report of 2020. We also examined differences across newspaper sections and visual content.
Some key takeaways:
A persistent low percentage of women newsmakers, although a small increase from 15% in 2023 to 17% in 2024.
Significant variation in female representation across different newspapers.
A disproportionate number of women are depicted as victims in news stories.
This study highlights the critical need for media organisations to pursue gender equality actively. We hope this research motivates media outlets and journalists to be more mindful of representation in their reporting.
